一篇完整的论说文中，作者必然会阐述一个明确的观点，也许可以说想要表达一个清楚有力的观点是作者要写一篇文章的最初目的。因而不管文章以何种方式表达思想，都要为作者的观点服务.并围绕它展开。所以读文章最重要的是读懂文章的中心观点。

要读懂文章的中心意思.首先要找到中心.找中心要分三步走:

【第一步】识别关键词(key word)。这一步要找出一段文章中以它为中心展开陈述的词，一般多为名词.例如:

Standing on the rim of the Grand Canyon. gazing across this giant wound in the Farth's surface, a visitor might assume that the canyon had been caused场。ancient convulsion. In fact, the event that produced the canyon, far from being sudden and cataclysmic, simply add叩to the slow and orderly process of erosion.

这一段中关键词是the Grand Canyon，该词及其简略形式 the canyon 在文中出现了三次并且全文都围绕它展开。请再分析这段话:

The Stone Age was a period of history which begin in appmximately 2 million B. C. and lasted until 3000 B. C. Its name was derived from the stone toils and weapons that modem scientists found.

本段关键词是the Stone Age，文中第一句就给出了它的定义，接着第二句又说明了它的名称的由来，可见这一词语在文章中地位之重要。

找出一个段落的关键词后.就有助于抓住该段落的中心句，即进到了第二步。

【第二步】识别主题句。主题句是一段完整的论述要表达的主要观点。一篇文章有若干部分，每部分都会有它相对完整的论述，因而每部分有相应的主题句。主题句表明作者的.观点，它可以在段首，段中或段尾。主题句有两个标志:

①一般说来，关键词即位于主题句中。

②主题句一般有一定的概括作用。例如:

We now define "psychology' as the study of human behavior by scientific methods. Behavior, as used here, refers to more than conduct, department or manner. It includes all normal and abnormal activities of the whole organism,even those of the mentally retarded and mentally ill. The purpose of this study is to explore the roles of behavior in self-discovery and the varied beneficient behavioral patterns the individual can develop. The aims of applied psychology，the description. prediction and control of human activities in order that we may understand and intelligently direct our own lives and influence the lives of others

这一段中主题句在首句We define "psychology" as the study of human behavior by scientific methods。全段共有五句。第二句和第三句解释 behavior 的含义.实际上是在解释和 behavior 有关的 psychology ,第四句讲明 psychology 作为一门学科研究的目的所在。第五句讲一门具体的分支—应用心理学的研究目标.意在以一实例讲清 psyct ogy 的含义。全段都完全围绕首句展开.为首句服务。
