Gourmet Food is a cultural ideal associated with the culinary arts of fine food and drink, or haute cuisine, which is characterized by refined, even elaborate preparations and presentations of aesthetically balanced meals of several contrasting, often quite rich courses.

To make gourmet food, Cooks and Chefs love to experiment with different recipes. Once they gain experience in cooking and baking they like to push themselves to the limit and create extraordinary gourmet delicacies. Gourmet food recipes are usually quite extensive and require the skills of an experienced cook.

Gourmet food is not just about how it was created and what ingredients were used, gourmet food is also about how it is presented. Presentation can make an ordinary meal into an extraordinary meal. Learning how to present your food is a craft all in itself. Using special sauces to drizzle or dollop on top, using color and texture to compile the food on to the plate, and adding a fresh garnish on top stimulates your eyes which adds to the whole gourmet food experience. Gourmet food presentation is a key lesson for all chefs going through culinary training.

Another tip for creating gourmet food is to know your spices. A good gourmet chef will know which spices and flavors compliment and play off of each other. Something sweet might be paired with something salty and the flavors can actually play off of each other. The dining experience is scrutinized from start to finish in order to know if your gourmet creation was a success or not.

Gourmet food is usually served in moderate to small quantities. This is so that you can taste and appreciate each and every flavor in your meal. You are not overwhelmed by having a huge plateful of food in front of you where flavors run into each other and your meal loses its identity.
