An Angel Rescued Us

It was one of those freak mid western ice storms, and my job was to get mymother home after her two week visit at my house. We didn't know the ice wascoming, but about halfway through our four hour drive, the rain turned to sleet,and then ice.

Drivers in this part of the country know what we mean when we say black ice.

That means the highway turns black in certain parts—glare ice, a dangerous timeto be traveling.

My husband stayed behind to go to work. In addition to my mother, our twochildren, ages four and two, were also passengers on this treacherous trip,buckled up in their car seats in the back.

I was driving along carefully; dusk was falling. My mother was watching the roadwith me, and talking on and off with the children. I left the state highway andturned off on a country road, looking for a short cut, and hoping for lesstraffic and maybe less ice.

A few minutes later, the car slid into the side ditch, down a rather steepincline. It happened so suddenly and I remember calling out,“Help me, God! Helpme!” It wasn't a slow slide; we were bouncing along in the side ditch. I wasdoing my best to hang onto the steering wheel.Then I felt a calm presence and the car slowed. I don't know how to explain itor express it, but there was a hum, an almost electric sound, and everythingslowed down.

Then it was as if something took hold of the front end of the carand gently brought it up out of the ditch and onto the road. I didn't drive thecar up out of the ditch.

My mother felt the electric hum, felt the peaceful removal of the car from theditch to the road, and had also been praying. She said it was an angel.

I didn't see anything, and didn't hear anything but that eerie humming noise. Iknow I kept my hands on the steering wheel and just let that presence take usback on the road to safety.

When we came to a stop in the road, there was no swerving or swirling as youmight imagine. It was all so gentle.

Then my daughter spoke up from the backseat,“Mommy, you woke me up.” I comfortedher and drove us safely to my parents' home.

When we finally arrived at our destination, we told the story to my father. Hesaid,“I was praying for you right at that time. I asked your guardian angels towatch over you.”

My mother and I seldom tell the story to others anymore. If we do, they saythings like,“Oh, you drove out of the ditch. You just can't remember.” But weknow differently. We felt it. We experienced it.

我没看见什么，也没听到什么，只有那可怕的嗡嗡声。我知道双手紧握方向盘，只是那天使把我们安全带回到路上。我们一停在路上，正如你想象的也没有转弯打漩。是那么安稳。

然后我女儿从后座那儿大声说，“妈妈，您把我吵醒了。”我安慰她，便平安地把车开到我父母的家里。
