On-the-job Training

Jenny: Can we have dinner together?

Sue: Sorry, I'll have to rush to my English class after work.

Jenny: OK, then how about tomorrow?

Sue: I'm terribly sorry that my classes are scheduled from Monday to Saturday.

Jenny: That's all right. We can do it on Sunday. But why do you study English so hard? You must be tired after the whole day's work. Why not simply take a break instead?

Sue: Well, my work prompts me to learn English. Our company is planning to start a branch in Australia. I must prepare in advance since I may have to use English in my daily work one day.

Jenny: Oh, I see. You take the initiative to improve your English competency. You have to pay the check, right?

Sue: Yes. I have to do this, or someday I may lose my job. Nowadays, when our company recruits new employees, the English level is listed as an important criterion.

Jenny: Yeah, many companies are doing the same thing. They believe the lack of English-speaking personnel may hold back their global plans.
