We have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences, but less time; we have more degrees, but less common sense; more knowledge, but less judgment; more experts, but more problems; more medicines, but less wellness.

We spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get angry too quickly, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too often, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values.We talk too much, love too little and lie too often.We've learned how to make a living, but not a life; we've added years to life, not life to years.

We have taller building, but shorter tempers; wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints.We spend more, but have less; we buy more, but enjoy it less.

We have been all the way to the moon and back, but have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor.We've conquered outer space, but not inner space.We've split the atom, but not our prejudice; we write more, but learn less; plan more, but accomplish less.

We've learned to rush, but not to wait; we have higher incomes, but lower morals.We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies, but have less communication.We are long on quantity, but short on quality.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion; tall men and short character; steep profits and shallow relationships; more leisure and less fun;more kinds of food, but less nutrition; two incomes, but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes.

时代的悖论

我们的住房越来越大，家庭却越来越小;我们拥有的便利越来越多，时间却越来越少;我们获得了更多的学位，常识却日益缺乏;我们掌握了更丰富的知识，判断却日益迟钝;老师辈出，问题却更多;新药迭出，健康却每况愈下。

我们的消费太盲目，欢笑太吝啬，开车太疯狂，发怒太轻易;我们入睡很晚，起床时很疲惫;书读得不多，电视看得不少，并且也很少祈祷。

我们成倍地增加拥有的财富，却贬低了自身的价值。我们说得太多，爱得太少，谎话连篇。我们懂得如何生存，却不懂得如何生活;我们延长寿命，却未能提高生活质量。

楼房在不断增高，脾气却变得暴躁;道路日益宽阔，视野却更加狭隘;我们付出得更多，收获却更少;我们买的东西更多，而从中得到的享受却更少。

我们已经能够往返于月球与地球之间，却不能去拜访街道对面的新邻居。我们已征服了太空，却无法走进人的内心;我们已成功地分解了原子，却不能打破偏见;我们写得更多，学到的却更少;我们计划的多，实施的少。

我们学会了争分夺秒，但没有学会等待;我们的收入不断提高，道德水准却日渐下降;我们造出了更多的计算机来储存信息，复制备份，相互交流却越来越少。数量在增加，质量却下滑。

这个时代——快餐食品与消化不良相伴，身材高大与品格渺小共存，追逐暴利与淡薄人情同步。闲暇更多了，乐趣却少了;食品花样多了，营养却减少了;两个人都挣钱了，离婚率也上升了;房子更漂亮了，家庭却破碎了。
