Magic in the Kitchen

My grandmother could do magic in the kitchen. Nanny could take the simplest ofingredients and create dishes that were like no one else's. Her spaghetti saucewas a family favorite. It would simmer all day long, filling her house with anaroma that made our mouths water. I was convinced her meatballs were straightfrom Heaven's menu. The trick, she’d say, was in the mixing.

I’d set the ingredients beside her glass mixing bowl. She’d combine them withoutmeasuring, just adding a pinch of this and a dash of that. When it came time tomix, Nanny would dig her hands down into the meat, working her wrists over andover, until everything was perfectly blended. She’d tell me,“Mixing meatballs isa lot like life. Both are spicy. Both are messy. Each have their owningredients, too. Don't be afraid to put yourself into the mix. What's so formeatballs is so for life.”

I never forgot. Someday I’ll have a granddaugher to pass this wisdom down to.

It's been fourteen years since Nanny passed away. I'm convinced she's makingmeatballs in Heaven.
