Zhang Ying and her colleague Vivian Mill are talking about the fax machine their department has just bought in their office.

A：Zhang，have you seen the new fax machine our department has just bought?

B：Definitely!It is beautiful.I like it.I have dreamed for a fax machine in our department for a long time.

A：Why are you so crazy about the fax machine?

A：你为什么对传真机如此喜欢啊?

B：The fax has greatly changed office work，especially in China. When you place a sheet of paper in a fax machine，the machine“reads”the writing on the page and changes the shapes of characters into electronic signals.It then sends these signals down an ordinary telephone line to another fax machine，which changes the signals back into the shapes of characters.You can imagine how useful this is，particularly in countries like China and Japan，which use written characters not letters.It is also useful for sending pictures，designs，maps and so on.

B：传真机使办公室的工作大为改观了，特别是在中国。你把一张纸放进传真机，机器就会“阅读”纸上的字，并把字形变为电子信号。然后，机器把这些电子信号送入普通的电话线路，传送到另一部传真机上，这部传真机就把这些信号再变成字形。你可以想像这种机器是多么有用，特别是在中国和日本这些国家，人们书写的文字是方块字，而不是字母。传真机还可以用来传送图片、设计、地图等等。

A：But sending a fax is more expensive than posting a letter.

A：但是发送传真费用比邮寄一封信高多了。

B：That’s true，but it is much quicker.For example，you can send information abroad immediately，but mailing a letter might take a weekor so.

B：这是真的，但是发送传真比邮寄信函要快得多。比方说，你可以把信息立刻传送到国外，而寄信则可能需要一周左右。

A：We can send emails，which may be quick and cheap as well.

A：我们可以发送电子邮件，它可是既快速又廉价啊。

B：That’s when we have our files in electronic versions.If the files are only in paper version，it would be more complicated to send an email because you need to scan the file into the computer first，and fax would be convenient in that situation.

B：那是我们有文件的电子版本的时候，如果该文件仅有纸质版，发送电子邮件就会变得很复杂，因为你需要先把文档扫描进计算机里，而那种情况下，如果有传真机的话就会方便了。

A：Yeah，fax is especially useful for urgent transferring of paper files.

B：I have heard that nowadays there is a kind of software which makes it possible to send faxes through the internet without using a fax machine.

A：That’s more convenient and cheaper.
