If you want to find out what's cool in the car world these days, you'll have to look back in time. That's because the hottest trend in the car industry right now is retro design.Car companies are building cars that are heavily influenced by the past and buyers are snatching them up.Volkswagen sold over 75,000 New Beetles in one year and Chrysler couldn't build its 1940s-style PT.Cruiser fast enough to keep up with demand.Ford also released a version of the Thunderbird based on models from the 50s.

“Retro's popular because as the world gets more complicated, it's sort of a safety blanket. We like things that we're familiar with…It makes me feel like a kid again, ”said Ford's top designer.

So is it any surprise that one of the most famous British cars of all time would also make a comeback?

During the 60s in England, one car was the king of cool:the MINI. Actors, musicians, models and even royalty loved the little car.It was so popular that the inventor of the“mini-skirt”, Mary Quant, named her famous dress after the car.

Launched in 1959, the MINI quickly won fans all over Europe.By the time the car ended production, over 5 million MINIs had been sold worldwide and it was voted as“European Car of the Century”.The car was tiny(around 3 meters long)and inexpensive, but the innovative design gave it a surprising amount of interior room. But most of all it was fun to drive.

BMW bought the rights to MINI in 1995 and knew that they had a huge task in creating a modern version of the legendary car.The original MINI may have been fun to drive, but compared to today's cars it was unsafe and uncomfortable.Bringing the classic car up to date involved adding an extra two feet to the length of the car(though it's still the smallest car on the market), and installing features that today's drivers take for granted:air conditioning, anti-lock brakes and power windows.

But will people fall in love with the new MINI? Only time can tell.
