Tsinghua University was founded in 1911 on the site of Xichun Garden (which changed to Tsinghua Garden Later), an attached imperial garden of the Old Summer Palace of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Named as Tsinghua Xuetang (清华学堂) and funded with part of the Boxer Indemnity, the school was a preparatory school in western style for students who were sent to study in the United States by the government.

清华大学始建于1911年，坐落在熙春园，熙春园是清朝(1644—1911)圆明园的属园(后来改为清华园)。命名清华学堂的这所学校受惠于庚子赔款，是政府以西式风格为留美学生开办的预备学校。

Today Tsinghua University has developed to a leading comprehensive university pursued by numerous high school students. It has 19 colleges and 55 departments, offering 66 bachelor's degree programs, 65 master's degree programs and doctoral programs and 13 national key laboratories. With 43 academicians from CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences) and 34 academicians from CAE (Chinese Academy of Engineering), Tsinghua University is celebrated for science and with engineering as its focus (Statistics Dec 31, 2013). Tsinghua University is a leader in many areas such as Humanities and Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Engineering, Life Sciences and Medicine and Economics and Management.

今天清华大学已经发展为一流的综合大学，是广大学子梦想的殿堂。它有19个学院和85个系，提供66个本科学位课程，65个博士、硕士学位授权，13个国家重点实验室。拥有来自中国科学院的43名院士和来自中国工程院(CAE)34个院士，清华大学以科学与工程作为重点(统计数据截止2013.12.31)。清华在人文社科、自然科学与工程、生命科学、医药、经管方面同样领先。

These advances are inseparable from its comfortable campus environment which rank high both at home and abroad. In fact, it has been ranked as one of the most beautiful universities in the world mainly because of its buildings which are characterized by a combination of Chinese and Western styles.

The whole campus can be divided into east section and west section along the north-south axis. The west section is the old campus which features American layout and Western structures. The Great Hall, the central architecture in this section, together with the Science Hall, west part of Gymnasium and the old Library were called Four Main Buildings in early times. The Great Hall is in ancient Roman style. It is regarded by Tsinghua people as a symbol of their resolute, simple and unyielding personality.

整个校园沿南北中轴线可分为东段和西段。西段老校区是美式布局和西方结构。这一部分的核心建筑——大礼堂，连同科学会堂、西体育馆和老图书馆，在早期被称为“四大建筑”。大礼堂是古罗马风格。它被认为是清华人坚定、纯洁和不屈品格的象征。
